I would like to start by congratulating all the winners from our Men's and Ladies' opening days. On ladies' opening day, the team of Lisa Newman, Virginia Roberts, Dorrine Kendrick and Julie Palm took home the win with their 18-hole scramble score of 75. On men's opening day, Denny Thornton was low net of the field with 65 and Vic Roshak was low gross of the field with 76. The winners of the team game were Larry Applegate, Shaner Applegate, Phil Garton and Stan Hopper with a great score of 24 under par. Both of the days went well and everyone seemed to have fun despite poor weather.

How your handicap system works
As you post scores the GHIN handicap system files them in chronological order. The system files 20 scores at a time, dropping the oldest scores as new scores are posted. Your handicap is calculated by averaging your ten best scores of the twenty along with your two best tournament scores. This average of those 12 scores is called your handicap index.
You use your handicap index at other facilities to find your course handicap. Your course handicap may be different at each course depending on what tees you are playing, how hard the course is rated, and what par the course is. This whole system runs on a set schedule and handicaps are calculated every two weeks.
So, to sum all that up, your handicap is basically an average of your 10 best scores out of 20. This means that only your good scores really count when your handicap is being processed.
The USGA states that you should not play to your handicap when playing average. You should play to your handicap when playing at your best. This is important to know because most golfers rate their rounds off of whether they match or beat their handicap. In reality you should probably only play to your handicap half the time and beat your handicap about 25 percent of the time. So next time you shoot two over your handicap, don't be so hard on yourself.
