Reggie Brown Memorial Tournament

'07 Reggie Brown raises big bucks for Buckaroos

True to form, the Reggie Brown Memorial Golf Tournament, a fundraiser for Pendleton High School golf, generated nearly $6,000 March 17 and 18.

The tournament boasted 84 players in four-person teams competing in a best ball format Saturday and a scramble on Sunday.

The lion's share of the money was raised Sunday when players bid on items donated by nearly 100 individuals and businesses.

The tournament, in its 12 th year, contributed $3,500 to PHS for equipment and travel expenses, and for food prepared by volunteers for the high school's invitational tournaments played at PCC.

The tournament also earmarks funds for two $500 scholarships, which are awarded to graduating seniors who played on PHS girls' and boys' golf teams. Last year, the scholarships were awarded to Ashley Treddenbarger, a student at Blue Mountain Community College , and Shane Dillavou, who attends Oregon State University .

As part of this unique relationship between the Reggie Brown Memorial tournament and PHS, the high school golf teams will donate $500 to Pendleton Country Club for an as yet unnamed course project.

Also continuing the tournament tradition, Greg and Darlene Smith, former Pendleton residents who now live in Hammond , again organized the tournament and auction. They were assisted by staff at PCC, members of the high school golf teams, and Lila Brown, the widow of the tournament's namesake who was a popular PCC member who worked as superintendent for Cascade Natural Gas before his death in 1994.

Tournament gross winners had the low score on both days with a best ball score of 66 and a scramble score of 61 for a 127 total. That group consisted of Paul Brown, Nels Nelson, Kris Kelley and Kordd Thornton.

The field's low net winners – Rich Thornton, Rich Maze, Denny Thornton and Fabio Riviera , rode their first-day best ball score of 55 to victory. Although they weren't among the top three teams in the scramble play, they built a big enough best ball lead to win the overall net title by two strokes.

Handicaps for the four-golfer teams had to add up to at least 40 with no more than two single-digit handicappers on a team. Winners of the overall two-day tournament in both gross and net divisions split $260, with day winners of best ball and scramble play earning $160 per team. Nearly $3,000 in Pro Shop credit was awarded to top teams and individuals in the tournament.

3 Club/3 Par Tournament

Howard Headley picked a good partner. He teamed with Jeff Rinehart to win the 3 club/3 par golf gournament in a field of 24 teams at Pendleton Country Club October 20 and 21. It was the fourth year in a row that Rinehart has been a member of the winning twosome.

The pair trailed by four strokes after the first day when players were allowed to use just three clubs and a putter, but bested the field by three strokes on day two when the course was turned in 18 par-three holes.

First-day leaders, Kordd and Rich Thornton, who topped the field with 70, had to settle for a third-place tie in the net competition. Bryan Payant and Bill Perkins won low net for the field.
