Reggie Brown Memorial Tournament
The Reggie Brown Memorial Golf Tournament two days of team golf, an auction and raffle, plus contributions from sponsors raised more than $6,000 for Pendleton High School golf teams.
A full field participated March 19 and 20 under mostly cloudy but rainless skies during the first day best ball play and withstood an on-again off-again gale during the scramble on Sunday.
The team of Warner-Warner-Jones-Rosak won low gross with a two-day team score of 123. They were in second place after Saturday's best ball with a score of 63.
The foursome of Solina-Reyes-Oleen-Garton had a one-stroke gross lead at 62 on Saturday, but had to settle for low net of the field with a handicap-adjusted total of 110.6.
The action didn't stop after the golf each day, with team bidding on Saturday afternoon and the auction and raffle on Sunday.
For the 10th year in a row, the event in memory of popular golfer Reggie Brown, who died in 1994 - was coordinated by Greg and Darlene Smith.
Lyla Brown, Reggie's wife, attended the Sunday afternoon activities and was presented with flowers.
A Jack Daniels BBQ was presented by Greg Roland to the Smiths in recognition for their work, which has now raised more than $36,000 for PHS golf.
This year, like last year, any amount in excess of $3,500 will go into a scholarship fund to assist a member of the golf team with college costs.
Members of the boys and girls teams were
recognized. Tony Hilde, the girls' coach, thanked PCC for last year's contribution, which was used to purchase team shirts and wind coats. Hilde noted that the girls' team already had won a tournament at The Dalles and placed third, just four strokes back of the winners, at a tournament in Tri-Cities.
Dennis Hunt handled auctioneer duties for a variety of items, from a bottle of Pendleton Whisky in a deer-antler holder to stump removal and from a sturgeon-fishing trip to a reconditioned vacuum cleaner.

Birch Creek Invitational
Paul Brown and Bernice Bigham teamed up to fire a 74 and low gross of the field honors but it was Gary and Karen Graybeal who were the weekend's big winners at the Birch Creek Invitational May 14 and 15.
Finishing one stroke back of Brown and Bigham, the Graybeals took first low gross in the first flight and were second in the soul survivor on Saturday, then played on the winning scramble team on Sunday. Throw in six golf balls and the Graybeals took home the most loot.
Tournament honors, however, went to Brown and Bigham, whose 74 was the same score the Graybeals won the tournament with last year.
Susan and Kris Kelley took low net of the field with a handicap-adjusted score of 62, three strokes better than the net winners in the first and second flights.
John and Pat Edmundson, who won the soul survivor, took home just $7.50 less than the Graybeals. The Edmundsons, from Heppner, had second low gross in the third flight and played on the second-place scramble team.
Dr. Ray Collis had the shot of the weekend, a hole-in-one on Number 13 on Sunday.

Round-Up City Am
Levi Herman, playing in his first Round-Up City Am, took the title in a sudden death playoff with Brad Christianson at Pendleton Country Club Sunday.
Christianson, a Pendleton native now living in Norman, Okla., is a seven-time winner and had won five championships in a row before ending the 36-hole tournament tied with Herman at two over par.
A third golfer, Jerry Knutson from La Grande, playing his two 18-hole rounds on Friday and Saturday, also shot two-over-par 146, but was not at the course on Sunday for the playoff.
Travis Graybeal was the first-day leader with a three-under-par 69 and a three-stroke lead on Herman and Gregg Corn of Walla Walla. Graybeal couldn't follow it up, however, and finished three shots off the lead.
Both Herman and Christianson blew opportunities to win the tournament outright before the playoff on Sunday. Christianson double-bogeyed the par three 17th after trouble in the sand bunker. And Herman, finishing his round on PCC's first hole, a par four dogleg right, had to settle for double-bogey 6 after his second shot flew the green and flirted with Birch Creek.
I thought I lost on the last hole with that double bogey, Herman said. I was too aggressive. I guess the adrenaline knocked it over the green.
The playoff, which ended on the second hole, wasn't pretty. Herman drove through the fairway then hit his approach shot to the left side of the green about 40 feet from the pin. Christianson, under a small tree on the right side the fairway, hit to about 20 feet above the hole. Both three putted for bogeys with Christianson missing a 30 incher that would have given him his eighth RUCA victory.
Herman won on the second hole after smashing a drive and hitting his approach just off the back of the green. Christianson hit trees on both sides of the fairway before lobbing his fourth shot to within 15 feet. He missed the par putt and Herman had a three-putt par for the win. If Brad would have made his par putt it would have made my five footer look like 15, Herman said.
The two golfers had the same score after 36 holes but that's where the similarities end. Christianson is an anesthesiologist in Norman, Okla. Herman hangs out at the golf course. Christianson is a family man with a wife and three children. Herman's girlfriend, Keri Lentz, who tends the PCC bar, is pregnant with their first kid. Christianson is clean cut and wears slacks on the golf course. Herman wears shorts and has colored tattoos up and down his neck.
We all know about Christianson, the perennial champion. But what do we know about the new Round-Up City Am champ? Obviously, the man can play golf. He sports a handicap of zero.
A PCC member since January, Herman was medalist at the Arizona Class 4A high school state golf tournament when he was a sophomore. Since he'd reached that pinnacle, he dropped out of school but didn't stop playing golf. He played lots of pro-ams and set records at three different Arizona courses. He put the clubs away for about three years, then dusted them off again when he came to Pendleton with Keri, whose family lives here.
He played first at Wildhorse but joined PCC because he liked the club environment and the condition of the golf course. He'd been playing well and went into the tournament confident, thinking, I had the best chance of everyone. He did and he has the trophy to prove it.
So what about those tattoos? He's a tattoo artist and was licensed to give ink in Arizona. He has tattoos at various locations but the he can't hide the ones that climb up his neck. People think I'm a weirdo, he said.
Are you?
No.
Straight up?
Yes, I am.
Introduce yourself next time you see that tattooed weirdo. You'll be shaking the hand of the new champ.

Golfers challenged by brutal pin placements at PCC's "U.S Open"
Number six was stretched to more than 600 yards with a wretched pin placed on the sloping left side of the green, but still that didn't compare to the ugly hole placement on number 10 where courtesy 10s were plentiful.
The pin on 10 actually made some golfers angry.
But it was just a game, guys, so get over it.
PCC Pro Fadel Nahle missed a three-footer that slid past the hole and raced 15 feet down the slanting bent grass to a position that wouldn't allow a putt to be made. The Pro missed seven times before picking up.
There were a couple of lucky one-putts but what separated Martin Manny from the field was his birdie chip in on the tenth.
Manny fired a 79 to take low gross among the men in a tournament designed to raise money to send Richard Matteson, the PCC course superintendent, to the British Open later in July.
Russ Herman and Spencer Sundin tied for low net at 75. Herman shot 82 gross with a four-putt on 10 and a two-stroke penalty for hitting from the wrong tee that was handicap adjusted to the winning score.
Vicki Scharn won the ladies low gross at 103 and Char Carner won low net at 78.
There were actually three games played.
Golfers played a routine gross/net tournament, could bet Matteson that they'd beat their handicap and they could add their gross score to a selected U.S. Open player's score for a combined 36-hole total.
Results, however, weren't provided for all the games.
