Round-Up City Am

Christianson again - fifth consecutive RUCA title

Brad Christianson “left it wide open” when he shot three-over-par 75 on Sunday, but nobody could step up to defeat the seven-time champion of the Round-Up City Am played June 11-13 at Pendleton Country Club.

It was Christianson's opening round of 69 – the only sub-par score from the field of 204 players – that gave him the cushion he needed to win his fifth RUCA title in a row, this time by three strokes over a trio of challengers – Dan Leighty, Travis Graybeal and Drew Price.

In his opening round, Christianson started slow on the back nine and was two over par after eight holes. He finished the back in 37 but went out in 32, finishing the last five holes (holes 5, 6, 7 8 and 9) in four under par, which included a 25-foot putt for eagle on No. 6.

Christians said he hit the ball better on Sunday but in spite of what he considered easier pins, the putts wouldn't drop. He shot even par on the front side but three-putted four times in the space of six holes to finish at 39 on the back. His two-putt birdie on No. 11 was his only birdie on the day.

Christianson acknowledged that the tournament scoring was a tribute to Greens Superintendent Richard Matteson and his crew.

“The greens were fast and the course in great condition, and you paid for it if you were not in the fairway,” Christianson said.

Christianson, who lives in Oklahoma City, said he's playing golf these days with his three daughters, ages 6, 9 and 12.

“The 12-year-old has a heck of a swing,” he said.

Ladies Club Championship

Irene Pedro won the 18-hole Ladies Club Championship for the third time, successfully defending her title from 2003.

The 2004 tournament was held on two consecutive Thursdays, Aug. 12 and 19, returning to a format previously used. The 2003 tournament had been held on a weekend, playing the same time as the medal play Men's Club Championship.

A close competition in the championship flight was anticipated with 10 ladies playing with handicaps from 13 to 16. But Pedro shot tow of her best rounds this summer – 80 and 81 for a total of 161, winning by an amazing 12 strokes.

Pedro, a 15-handicapper, got off to a routine start the first day, shooting 44 on the first nine, but finished with a one-under-par 36 on the back. She bogeyed the 10th hole, birdied 14 and 15, and parred the rest.

Competitors were paired by score the second day with Pedro at 80, Vivian Bowen at 85, Nancy Wallace at 89 and a PCC newcomer and promising golfer, Kathy Gregory at 90. In the second foursome was Barb Nelson, 91, Bernice Bigham, 92, Vickie Scharn, 93, and Nancy Harsch, 92.

Pedro continued her good play with a 41 on the front and 40 on the back for 81. She was consistent with seven bogeys and 11 pars. Her 161 total was 12 strokes better than her winning 173 last year. Pedro had 27 putts the first day and 30 the second.

“I had a great group to play with the final day,” said Pedro. “They encouraged me all the way around.”

Scharn came back with a solid 40-40 for 80 to take runner-up honors with a 173 total.

“Actually, my 93 was a fine round, considering the 10 I took on the par three eighth hole,” said Scharn, who found the bunker and couldn't get out.

Bowen took third with 85-91 for 176.

Bernice Bigham won the A flight championship with 92-93 for 185. Harsch shot 93-94 and Char Carner shot 98-89, both with 187 totals for second place in the A flight.

Betty Smith won the B flight with 105-103 for 208. Wanda Wyrick was second with a 209 total – 108-101.

Alva Worley won the C flight at 113-116 for 229.

Dorothy Reese won the 9-hole championship with rounds of 56 and 50.
