Round-Up City Am

Christensen wins sixth RUCA
That makes four in a row for Oklahoma anesthesiologist

Four in a row, six overall.  No big deal. Just steady above-average golf.

Hit fairways and greens and make an occasional putt.  Maybe it's his trade, being an anesthesiologist.  That's the guy in the hospital who helps you take a nap while the doctors are digging for gold, right? You'd have to be pretty confident and competent to take on that task.  jeez, what would happen if the patient work up in the middle of surgery?  That would be like a double bogey for brad Christensen.

The Pendleton native who now lives in Norman, Oklahoma, returned to Pendleton country Club again June 6-8 to defend his title in the Round-Up City Am.  More than 200 players from all over the Northwest--and one from Oklahoma--played 36 holes under a scorching sun, but only Christensen, tall, lanky, good looking Brad, with a swing to dream about--the ball just rockets off the club, climbing, climbing, before finishing with a slight draw that gives him even more roll--played under par.

He shot 70 the first day and 72 the second day, and he thought he hit the ball better in the second round. His start on the opening round was very unBradlike.  He double-bogeyed his starting hole, that rascal three-par Number 13.  Than he bogeyed the par-five 14th, a hole where he should have accepted nothing more than a birdie.

Since he didn't birdie 14 like he should have, he played the next 15 holes in six under par before three putting 12, his final hole, for another bogey.  So that's how you shoot 2 under: two bogeys, a double bogey, four birdies, an eagle (no. 11) and let's see, do the math, that leaves 11 pars.  The second day was a ho-hummer.  He just didn't make the birdie putts. "I could make the four and five footers," he said.  The even par round included three bogeys, three birdies and 12 pars.

Christensen used his driver more this year, mostly because he was so frustrated after his first two holes.  Of course, he didn't use the driver on this third hole, Number 15, but he slashed away with that high draw on many of the par fours where he normally might hit a fairway wood or iron.  Believe it or not, Christensen said the rough didn't seem as rough as it usually is.  He praised the greens, which were lightning fast, and said the wind on Sunday didn't bother him.  He teed off at 8 am both days, pretty much avoiding the wind that the afternoon players faced on Saturday.

"I felt sorry for them," Christensen said.  Whatever.  Anyway, Christensen plays twice a week at home in Norman.  He planned to compete in the Oklahoma State Amateur later in June at Muskogee.

2003 RUCA Results

Nobody stepped up to challenge Brad Christensen, who shot two-under par 142 to win the 36-hole Round-Up City Am at Pendleton Country Club June 6-8.  One-time winner, Jeff Rinehart, a PCC player, was closest, four shots back at 146.  Dan Leighty, also from PCC, was another stroke back at 147.  Gregg Corn from Walla Walla, a popular favorite each year, and Jim Jones from Happy Valley tied at 150. Two players - Mike Corey from PCC and Mike Balkovich from Portland - shared low net honors with scores of 130 - 14 under par.  Bill Boggs from Walla Walla, who shot a 151 total, defeated Christensen on the first hole of sudden death in a nine-hole soul survivor.  Corn was third.  Here are the results from the 44th annual RUCA:

Low gross for the field - Brad Christensen, Norman, OK, 142
Low net for the field - Mike Corey, PCC, and Mike Balkovich, Portland, 130

Amos Rabb Two-Man Scramble

Well, old Richard and Martin didn't have the same go of it this year. The pair – Matteson and Manny – who tore it up at 14 under last year didn't make the leader board July 4 in the Amos Rabb two-man scramble.

The twosomes of Joe Reyes-Steve Patten and Travis and Gary Graybeal finished in a tie for low gross honors with scores of 64 – that's eight under par and much more believable than the unconscious 58 carded by Matteson-Manny a year ago.

Here are the top finishers:

Gross-1 (tie), Reyes-Patten, Graybeal-Graybeal, 64. 3 (tie), Jeff Rinehart-Rick Bordenkircher, Rod and Andrew Solina, 66. 5 (tie), Rob Hillmick-Martin Herron, Drew Price-Travis Stoddard, 67.

Net-1, Tom Smith-Jeff Bruton, 61.25. 2 (tie), Russ Herman-Gary Dillavou and Paul Brown-Scott Brown, 61.5. 4 (tie), Greg Roland Jr.-David Baty, Bill Snyder-Bob Oleen, Gordie Guyett-Glen Smith, 63.

Three Club / Three Par

Bob Oleen's hole-in-one leads to net title with Scott Garton

Jeff Rinehart and Rick Bordenkircher teamed up to win the 2-day, 36-hole Three Club/Three Par tournament at Pendleton Country Club Oct. 4 and 5.  Two dozen 2-person teams competed in the unique tourney.

On Saturday, golfers were allowed to play the 72-par course with only three clubs and a putter.  On Sunday, golfers could use all their clubs to play a 54-par course that featured 18 par-three holes.

Superintendent Richard Matteson, who had the course in beautiful condition, used his notorious imagination to create par threes nobody had seen before.
